Chris McAlister Heads to the Bayou

Philadelphia Eagles v Baltimore RavensESPN’s John Clayton reports that former Ravens pro bowl cornerback Chris McAlister has signed with the undefeated New Orleans Saints.  Specifics of the deal were not made public, but it is believed that it is just a one year deal.  There were teams at the beginning of the year that wanted to sign McAlister, but he wanted to wait until his knee has completely healed.  Last season, he suffered a season ending knee injury, that was evident after being scorched by the Indianapolis Irsays, in a 31-3 defeat last year.  The need for a cornerback came as a result of an injury suffered by Jabari Greer, who suffered an a groin injury.  To matters worst for New Orleans, last Sunday, as the Saints defeated the hapless Rams, Saints cornerback Tracy Porter suffered an MCL sprain and is out indefinitely.

Chris McAlister led the NFL in interceptions during the 2006 season and was a three time pro bowler (03, 04, 06) with the Baltimore Ravens.  C-Mac was a key ingredient for the Super Bowl XXXV Champion Baltimore Ravens and their legendary defense, which forced the most turnovers, most defensive touchdowns, and fewest points allowed during the 2000 season.  McAlister will be remembered for a drive stopping interception near the goalline in Super Bowl XXXV to solidify a dominating performance in a 34-7 win over the New York Giants to capture Baltimore’s first Super Bowl Championship since 1970 (Super Bowl V).  When he played, the top receivers in the NFL, including Chad Ochocinco, Hines Ward, and Randy Moss put up dismal numbers thanks to the smothering and physical play of this pro bowl corner back.

C-Mac fell out of favor with Coach John Harbaugh, but given our current corner back situation, couldn’t we have worked thing out with C-Mac instead of watching Foxworth fall down all the time? All we can do now is wonder…..
