Laird Barron has emerged as one of the strongest voices in modern horror and dark fantasy fiction, building on the eldritch tradition pioneered by writers such as H. P. Lovecraft, Peter Straub, and Thomas Ligotti. His stories have garnered critical acclaim and been reprinted in numerous year's best anthologies and nominated for multiple awards, including the Crawford, International Horror Guild, Shirley Jackson, Theodore Sturgeon, and World Fantasy Awards. His debut collection, The Imago Sequence and Other Stories, was the inaugural winner of the Shirley Jackson Award.

He returns with his second collection, Occultation. Pitting ordinary men and women against a carnivorous, chaotic cosmos, Occultation's eight tales of terror (two never before published) include the Theodore Sturgeon and Shirley Jackson Award-nominated story "The Forest" and Shirley Jackson Award nominee "The Lagerstatte." Featuring an introduction by Michael Shea, Occultation brings more of the spine-chillingly sublime cosmic horror Laird Barron's fans have come to expect.

Shit. Finally a decent book instead of a romance.

i am. but i made the mistake of buying a nook instead of a kindle when they first came out. problems with my first nook is what lead to my intense dislike of b&n.

I know I am always pimping the library, but I have a nook and I rarely buy anything for it. If your library has an e-book section, check it out!

Get it while it's hot, fellas. I guess I will actually get this one because my wife really is a fan of Amish romance novels. Go figure.

Image
Today’s Free Fridays title—A Time to Love by Barbara Cameron—is a beautiful story set in the Amish community of Lancaster County, Pennsylvania.

The Amish lifestyle—with its rejection of modern convenience and an emphasis on community and family—has long captured our imagination. More recently, Amish romance has emerged as one of the hottest trends in fiction. Cameron’s touching story—about an injured war correspondent who returns to her Amish grandmother’s home to recuperate—is a wonderful introduction to this popular genre.
War correspondent Jennie King thinks she's just a temporary guest in her grandmother's Amish community while she recuperates from the devastating injuries sustained in a car bomb attack that changed her world. But when she meets Matthew Bontrager, the man she had a crush on as a teenager, she wonders if God has a new plan for her. Jennie has emotional and physical scars and though she feels she has come home to this man and this place, she's not sure she can bridge the difference between their worlds.

Which begs the question, how would an Amish guy respond on Z-Day?

My money is on him saying, "Well fuck this" and shouldering up an M-60 and hopping behind the wheel of a Hummer.

The mission is classified . . . and illegal

In the blistering heat of the Sudan, the CIA has gone rogue. On the trail of a notorious terrorist, Agency operatives have overstepped their sanctioned boundaries. And now the ultimate weapon has fallen into the wrong hands.

As Danny Freah and his spec-ops team scramble to recover a top secret aircraft that has crashed in Africa, Whiplash Director Jonathon Reid finds himself mysteriously shut off from information about the robot drone and its mission. Maneuvering through the twisted back corridors of the CIA and Washington’s power elite, Reid discovers secrets both illegal and highly dangerous—a virtually unstoppable assassin and an out-of-control clique within the Agency.

Torn between loyalty and conscience, Reid must find a way to alert the President and avert a national disaster. But with the Whiplash team caught in the chaos of a brutal African civil war and CIA officials desperate to keep Reid from telling what he knows, a monster re-emerges to target its creators . . .
