My First Brew

Postby Elwood » February 4th, 2012, 6:05 pm

Well the time has finally come when I could brew my own beer. I must admit that I've done a poor job of documenting the production of my first brew, but nonetheless will spare you all that and just get to the point.

I decided to brew an oatmeal stout, which is my favorite. However, I thought that I'd add some clover honey to the recipe just to boost the abv and add a little flavor. I will admit that on bottling day I was a bit skeptical about the final product.

Today FM and our cousin came over to give it a try. Not too bad for my first brew. The aroma was that of a traditional stout, roasted malts and then there was the honey. It poured black like a stout should, but there wasn't much head to it. It had a medium body, just right, and not too thick....another win! The fact that we could actually drink a pint of it without any obscure facial expressions was a positive sign. The honey was obvious, but not too overbearing...well maybe just a touch for my own liking.

Overall, I was very pleased with the outcome. I learned a lot during this process and will apply what I've learned from this round to the next.

Cheers!

Agreed. Your review was pretty spot-on. Just a bit too much on the honey and not very heady but I thought you did really well on your first try.

I used to brew a lot before my kids were born. My plan was to get a chest freezer, put a thermostat on it, drill it out for 3-4 taps and start kegging. Bottling is kind of a pain in the ass. Now the real estate in my basement that I had envisioned having a bar, pool table, any my mega-keg-o-rator is populated with Legos and Barbies.

I still have all of my brewing gear and I'll get back into it some day, but maybe not until my kids move out and I can start reclaiming some of my house as my own.

I'm envious of you, Elwood.

I'm going to be getting back to my brewing full force this spring, and plan to do some videos that I'll feature here when I'm back into it. Showing the process at first, then some sampling videos and the like. I need to get the new version of BeerSmith on my laptop first, though.

I want to start all grain brewing, but don't have the room for reasons that Clem has already mentioned.

Johhny, I look forward to the videos.
