I tried to remove my debit card and they won't let me because of auto-renewal or some shit. I forget the specific message.

So that bullshit is still there. If I remember right, you have to call in now to cancel auto-renewal. I stopped auto renewal on the site right before they killed that functionality. It's why I've kept with prepaid cards for my subscription.

You can shut the auto renew off on Xbox.com now. Click on 'My Account' and it's in there

I just went there and didn't see it. What sub-part of "My Account" is it under?

Problem I had was that while I could take off auto renew, I could not remove the credit card associated with my membership until it had completely run out. I bought a 12-month code and waited for today, the day after my membership expired, and then I was able to remove the card that had previously been used for the charges. Now I am points cards all the way.

I don't know if you all remember the fun I had with this, but all I can say is don't let it try and charge to an expired card and then apply a code while that's pending.

The recommended option for cancelling your Xbox LIVE Gold Membership is to turn off automatic renewal. With automatic renewal “off,” your membership will expire at the end of its term. To do this:

Go to My Account.
Click Sign In (upper-right corner) and type your Windows Live ID information (if you’re not already signed in).
Next to Automatic Renewal, click Change.
Change your automatic renewal setting to OFF.

Important: If you turn off auto-renewal, your Xbox LIVE Gold Membership will expire at the end of your paid membership time. Until then, you can continue to enjoy all the benefits of Xbox LIVE membership.

Note: If you would like to immediately cancel/disable your Xbox LIVE Gold Membership, please contact Xbox Support using the Assistance information at the bottom of this page. From the contact us page, use the Request a Call from Support option. You cannot cancel your account through chat or email. Immediately disabling your account will forfeit the remaining time on your membership.

When I try to remove my card, I get this message:

This payment option cannot be removed at this time. Go to the Payment method information page to view services associated with this payment option.

When I go to the Payment Method Information Page, there is no way to remove the card -- I can only enter an alternate.

Sounds like you are in the same situation that I am in. Once had your CC used for renewals and then renewed with either CC or code before the membership expired. It always honors the most recent membership option and then goes back and uses up the remainder of any previous one. Stupid system, but I'll bet that's what happened.

That sounds pretty much exactly like what happened. The card on file with them is a debit card, so I'll see if I can replace it with a credit card so at least no one can drain my bank account.

Still probably won't let you totally remove it until every shred of account associated with it is finished. Pissed me off that I had to wait for months for my membership to expire to be able to remove it but at least it's done.

I was able to remove the debit card once I put the credit card on. I also went in and made my password a lot more difficult, as well as my security question, and I put my cell phone # in there too. I'm not sure if it texts you if someone attempts to change your password, but that was the impression I got.

Regardless, I'm a lot more secure now than I was before.

While we're on the topic, last time I checked it was a really bad idea to enter your credit card number in the PSN store; Sony transmits your credit card information unencrypted. Use the point cards sold in Best Buy, et al.

I recieved a few emails this morning from the xbox live team containing codes for login account info. Makes me nervous to think someone was possibly trying to get into my account.
Everything was intact this morning but I changed my password, info, ect, so if anyone notices my tag online playing something off the wall I would appreciate a heads up. Thanks.

What kind of codes do you mean? You mean something asking for your login info or sending a login link?
