I played trumpet, all percussion instruments, and french horn in middle school. I started out playing baritone in HS, early 90's, the quickly switched to percussion where I stayed until I graduated. It was during this time I got my first drum kit and joined a band. We were the typical HS cover band, playing at parties mostly. From there I took my playing more serious and it just so happened that two of my roomies were musicians as well. So we started up a band playing, mainly rock, some covers, some originals.....then eventually played straight originals with the occasional cover. Things went well....playing in bars and small festivals along the east coast, did some studio work....this continued for a couple of years until we graduated....and then we just went our separate ways.....great times. After that I got back into playing sports and the whole music thing fell by the way side. I did play in our churches contemporary worship band for a couple of years which got me back into playing and was definitely a different style of music than I was used to, but worth it. Since then, I have put the kit back together and started practicing (paradiddles etc.) ......cause I sure need it. :D

That's my story.

BTW.....FM is a good guitar player.

It's been a while since I last played, but I use to play some drums. 2000-2003 I was in a jam band (surprising, I know ;) ) though I would use the word "band" loosely
And I can play a bit of piano/keys

I would really love to get a kit and start playing again

So like I mentioned a while back I've been jamming atleast 2-3 times a month with some guys for about 5 months now and it's going pretty well.

A lot of the coastal area bars draw big local crowds during the winter weekends and fairly big crowds throughout the week during the summer months. Bands in this area are usually looking to put their foot in the door this time of year to get regularly booking gigs through the busy summer.
Without much warning, a owner of a local well established bar who knows our drummer asks if we could play this Friday! I guess they had another band cancel or maybe just a random open date. Funny how that works.

Suddenly I'm very aware I haven't played out as a band in about 6 years, realized our lack of equipment to fill a medium sized bar, and remembered how much I missed it all. This should be interesting. Looks like the possibilty for a little extra summer income just for doing something that I love is suddenly a reality. Wish us luck! 8)

That's awesome man, funny how things seem to work out sometimes. Don't sweat the details too much, I have a feeling they will all work themselves out...sometimes things happen for a reason. In your case, I'm sure that reason is so a newly single guy can get a few after show "dates".

Friday? So what. The hardest part of all of it will be creating a set list.

You've been throwing together set lists, mix tapes (funny how that's about as obsolete as a photo album), and audio samples since 1986 when you mixed Tiffany, Madonna, Iron Maiden, Michael Jackson AND made it work. No small feat mind you.

You wrote the book on how to record a mix tape. Hell, I thought the movie High Fidelity was about you since you've had your cd collection in autobiographical order ever since I can remember. Although I'm not sure who Jack Black's character is based on...

You may leave the music, but it never leaves you. Have fun and enjoy it bro. You'll rock it. You always do.

That's not true. It was Debbie Gibson, not Tiffany!

Actually, the setlist was indeed fairly simple with only around 40 songs to play with. God bless you Tom Petty.

And Elwood, there is a fine line between "roadie" and "backstage event coordinator". You're a happily married man and I didn't want you getting in trouble!

Damn, I didn't think about Wham.....we'll have to learn that for next time. 8)

It's mostly classic rock stuff mixed in with some 80s/90s/00s stuff . At 37 I'm the youngest guy in the band so the back catalog is alot thicker than the new one. Plus we've all played around this area enough to know what goes over well and what drunk people want to sing and interact with. It's funny as hell to me seeing 100 drunk people singing along karaoke style to Men At Work or The Doors.

Tom Petty, Rolling Stones, U2, Hendrix, John Hiatt, Matthew Sweet, Collective Soul, blah-blah-blah. Nothing too guitar-flashy, maybe a few blues jams here and there. We've fooled around with some harder material like Van Halen, AC/DC, etc during practice but I don't think it's ready for Friday.
