Can anyone believe that it’s already week 13, and that most teams only have a mere 5 games remaining on their schedules? Soon we will be forced to only watch basketball and hockey before the excruciating summer of solely money ball, more known as baseball.
This, however, is the most interesting part of any NFL season. There are teams in the hunt who have no true identity, i.e. Denver, Jacksonville, Tennessee, teams in the hunt who have an identity, i.e. Pittsburgh, Baltimore, San Diego, and then there are dominant teams such as Indianapolis and teams looking for a good draft pick when talking of garbage such as the Raiders, surprise surprise. Right now the standings look like a jumbled mess with tie-breakers deciding many of the teams who would be in the playoffs if the season ended today.
When I see the standings, I begin constantly thinking of scenarios that include so many if’s and then’s that I sometimes go insane thinking of the possibilities. Always after one of these sessions of trying to figure out what will happen I have to remind myself, “If Denver takes care of business, they are in the playoffs.” Plain and simple. If Denver wins out, I guarantee a playoff spot, and most likely the division. If Denver goes 4-1 they will still end up in the playoffs, but most likely a wild card. Anything after that and Denver’s postseason hopes are up in the air, relying too much on who else loses or wins and too much of the ’if and then’ scenarios previously mentioned.
Bottom line, Denver needs to finish the season the way they started. There is a very good chance they will do so as well with three extremely winnable division games upcoming. This is the position we as fans have found our beloved Orange Crush in the last few years, with undesirable results each time, excluding the 2005 season of course.
To obtain these evasive results, Denver needs to continue playing how they did against the Giants. The devastating defense that has held down opponents in seven of the eleven games needs to show up to each game. The offense will need to improve, something I have said since the beginning of the season, and start scoring touchdowns instead of kicking field goals.
I believe McDaniels summed it up best with, “All we’re trying to do is win a mother-(beep)ing game!” This needs to be the Broncos attitude the rest of the way. If it is, I believe we will be talking about playoff positioning in week 17 rather than draft positioning. Which will be a very welcome occurrence in Broncos Country.
