With the Broncos coming off of a bye week, which I hate, there are still a few areas the Broncos need to improve in their upcoming games. True, the Orange and Blue are 6-0. True, Denver has blown out opponents in the second half, outscoring them 76-10. But there are still a few glaring issues that I believe need to be addressed moving forward.
1) The first half performance of both sides of the ball. The offense seems to always sputter, and the defense doesn’t lock anyone down until the second half, except Oakland and Cleveland but they really don’t count. I know that is by far the most important half, but the Broncos will need to play complete games against teams such as the Steelers.
2) Special teams. Eddie Royal was a beast against San Diego, and if it weren’t for him Denver may very well be 5-1. Allowing Sproles to answer with a TD of his own was fairly aggravating however. Prater has been okay so far. He needs to become more consistent otherwise he’ll be heading down the same path as Kern did this week though.
3) Scoring offense. Kyle Orton has done better than I thought he would, and I expected more from him than most. The offense is moving the ball up and down the field efficiently…until it comes to scoring. While being ranked 9th in the NFL in yards per game, the Broncos offense is only ranked 17th in scoring. The red zone offense must improve if Denver is to stay on this winning streak.
There are several other things one could nitpick at, but I felt that these three issues are the ones that need to be addressed immediately if Denver is to remain a top team in the NFL. I have no doubt that the Broncos will improve in each of these areas as the team moves through the season.
