Remaining strong in its third weekend, Inception pulled in another estimated $27.5 million bringing its total to right at $193 million. Next in its sights – the $200 million mark, with hopefully $300 million in the not too distant future. This will probably be it’s last weekend at the top due to next weekends opening of the Will Ferrell/Mark Wahlberg comedy The Other Guys. Speaking of comedies, Dinner For Schmucks had a pretty good opening, as it pulled in $23.3 million in its first three days. The big shocker of the weekend was just how poorly Cats and Dogs: The Revenge of Kitty Galore performed. I totally overestimated the kids desire to see this one. It made a terrible $12.5 million this weekend, opening about $9 million less than the original. With a budget of $85 million, this one looks to fall in the ‘dud’ department. The other opener this weekend, Charlie St. Cloud did decent business with $12.1 million on a $44 million budget. Not too much was expected from this one, and it fell close to where I predicted. SALT managed to have a decent second weekend, pulling in another $19.2 million. There appears to be no stopping Despicable Me as it remained the ‘kid’ film of choice bringing in another $15.5 million and is closing in on the $200 million mark – which it should hit this upcoming weekend. With the summer movie season coming to an end, a handful of films still look to do decent business – The Expendables, Scott Pilgrim vs the World, and Eat Pray Love all debut on August 13, and there should be a lot of people going to the movies that weekend with such a diverse group of films.
